Spark of Joy

My friend Melissa recently recommended a book to me – The Life Changing Magic of Tidying.  I bought a copy and powered through the pages and have become completely inspired to de-clutter our home!

the-life-changing-magic-of-tidying

A comprehensive, illustrated manual on how to de-clutter and organize specific items throughout the house, from kitchen and bathroom items to work-related papers and hobby collections. User-friendly line drawings illustrate Kondo’s patented folding method as it applies to shirts, pants, socks, and jackets, as well as images of properly organized drawers, closets, and cabinets. Kondo also add in-depth advice on moving, packing, and dealing with necessary objects that may not spark joy—answering all the questions she’s gotten since her first book. This manual is perfect for anyone who wants a home—and life—that sparks joy.

Over the years we have accumulated so many toys, clothes and other items and as a result, I feel quite overwhelmed with all the ‘stuff’ in our home.  My goal for 2016 is to have a good clean out and live the simple, minimal life and enjoy items that only ‘spark joy’!

What’s App?

Morning Man

I always love stumbling across a new App and this week I have found three superb ones!

I’m not naturally a morning person but I have begrudgingly become used to them with a husband that has his alarm set for 5:30am most mornings to go to work, and two little people who are early risers.  I struggle to bounce out of bed each morning but recently came across The Morning Man Alarm Clock. I now wake to a gentle reminder in French that it is time to get up!  Love it!

THE MORNING MAN® Alarm Clock App is the best way to wake up and start your day. Listen to sweet and romantic voices from around the globe waking you up every morning! Why have a loud chirp or a bell as an alarm when you could wake up with a real Morning Man®?

Morning Man

When doing the grocery shopping or some other task that requires James to be engaged in some form of entertainment/learning, I reach for my phone to distract him from toppling all the apples from the display.  I know, I know – I’m not the perfect Mum, but I do find at times a good App is a godsend for me to get in and get the job done, without a grizzling toddler to boot.

My good friend Cherida has just been in Europe with her young family for four months and advised that Thinkrolls and Mini Ocean Swimmer were winners on long train/plane trips.  I uploaded these little numbers and James is engrossed!  At least I don’t feel too guilty as they certainly have learning outcomes for little fingers and their fine motor skills (that’s what I tell myself anyway)!  xx

Thinkrolls

Set your child’s mind in motion. Thinkrolls are the 22 hilarious characters in this educational app that’s one part rolling ball platformer, one part physics puzzler and 100% irresistible for kids 3-8.

Picnics : Museums : Playgrounds

After a busy week of working, it was so lovely hanging out at home with Poppy, James and Nick and enjoying the simple things together.

We baked scones and took them down to Long Beach for a picnic and had a play on the beach.  We had dinner at the yacht club on Friday night with family and friends (where kids eat free).  A rainy Saturday morning saw us retreat to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) and on a sunny Sunday we went to the park and spent the rest of the day in the garden.  Bliss.  xx

Seafood Seduction

Wowsers – another week has passed and I have been so flat-out, I have barely had time to scratch myself!

Last weekend I worked again with Tourism Tasmania, hosting a group of six Indonesian VIP’s from the Bank of Asia, Clara Magazine – a gorgeous glossy for the stylish Indonesian woman, and two representatives from Tourism Australia.

Clara

The aim of their visit was to experience Tasmania with the hope of enticing more Indonesian’s to our State in the future.  After meeting the group at the airport on Friday morning, they were whisked out to Mona in the Posh Pit where they enjoyed the museum, a beautiful lunch at The Source and then a wine tour and tasting with my friend, Dan.

A drive to the top of Mt. Wellington (Kunanyi) bought many ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’, followed by another beautiful meal at the Wrest Point Revolving Restaurant.

The next morning, we blitzed the Salamanca Market (where I quickly found out than Indonesian’s certainly love their shopping) but the highlight of their trip however, was Rob Pennicott’s Seafood Seduction Tour.

Seafood Seduction

Enjoy oysters shucked straight from the water, rock lobster and see your guide dive for abalone and sea urchin.  Be delighted as your catch is turned into a delicious seafood feast accompanied by gourmet local produce and Tasmanian wines, boutique beers, ciders and juices.

Hopping on a boat in Kings Pier, our wonderful guides – Ido and Kate hosted the perfect day, despite the lumpy conditions in the Channel.

Seafood Seduction

I will let the photos speak for themselves but it was the ultimate trip for our international guests – combined with professional yet laid-back guides and amazing seafood including the freshest oysters you will ever eat.  The highlight for the group was experiencing Ido and Kate don their wetsuits and actually dive for our lunch, where they caught fresh sea urchin and abalone.

Abalone

As we rolled off the boat, full to the brim with seafood we then had dinner (and more seafood) at The Glass House on the Brooke Street Pier.

I waved the group off at the airport the next morning and I am sure we will see many more of their counterparts coming to Tasmania in search of our amazing seafood and beautiful scenery.  xx

Book ♥

Poppy's Book Shelf

Poppy and James love their books and value our evening ritual of reading time.  Poppy particularly enjoys more detailed ‘chapter’ books at the moment and can’t wait to put the bookmark in each night, ready for the next installment.  James’ favourite book is Mr Huff!  I can’t tell you how many times I have read it, but I still love it too.

MrHuff.web

I recently came across this gorgeous shelf on The Grace Tales site and felt inspired by some of the books displayed.

Children's Books

Always a sucker for a fashion icon, Just Being Audrey stood out for me straight away.  After having a look on the Book Depository site, we may need to write a letter or two to Santa!

Just Being Audrey

From Roman Holiday to Breakfast at Tiffany’s, when Audrey Hepburn starred in a movie, she lit up the screen. Her unique sense of fashion, her grace, and, most important, her spirit made her beloved by generations. But her life off screen was even more luminous. As a little girl growing up in Nazi-occupied Europe, she learned early on that true kindness is the greatest measure of a person-and it was a lesson she embodied as she became one of the first actresses to use her celebrity to shine a light on the impoverished children of the world through her work with UNICEF. This is Audrey Hepburn as a little girl, an actress, an icon, an inspiration; this is Audrey just being Audrey.

The other one that caught my eye was Different Like Coco.  Say no more.

The rags-to-riches story of Coco Chanel plays out in a wonderful picture-book biography as full of style and spirit as its heroine.

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was always different. And she vowed to prove that being different was an advantage! Poor, skinny, and orphaned, Coco stubbornly believed that she was as good as the wealthier girls of Paris. Tapping into her creativity and her sewing skills, she began making clothes that suited her (and her pocketbook) — and soon a new generation of independent working women craved her sleek, comfortable, and practical designs. Now an icon of fashion and culture, Coco Chanel continues to inspire young readers, showing just how far a person can come with spunk, determination, and flair.

Different Like Coco

The final inspiration is This is Venice by M. Sasek.

This is Venice

On the heels of the runaway bestsellers This is New York and This is Paris, Universe is pleased to reissue another title from M. Sasek’s beloved and nostalgic children’s travel series.

Like the other Sasek classics, This is Venice is a facsimile edition of his original book from the 1960s and is still timely and current in every way. The brilliant, vibrant illustrations have been meticulously preserved, remaining true to his vision more than 40 years later and, where applicable, facts have been updated for the twenty-first century, appearing on a “This is…Today” page at the back of the book. The stylish, charming illustrations, coupled with Sasek’s witty, playful narrative, makes for a perfect souvenir that will delight both children and their parents, many of whom will remember this book from their childhood.

This is Venice, first published in 1961, presents indelible impressions of romantic, watery Venice, where under a brilliant blue sky Sasek the gondolier navigates the winding canals to visit such famous and glorious landmarks as the Palazzo Grassi, Piazza San Marco, Doges Palace, and the Accademia di Belle Arti. This is Venice

Even though these classic books would be valuable reads, I would appreciate them purely for their covers!

Boat Licence

Boat Licence

I have been meaning to get my boat licence for quite some time now and last week, I finally manage to jump on a course at the RYCT and pass all the requirements.

When away on our boat, I am more than capable of steering and getting us to where we need to go, but when it comes to maneuvering, putting down the anchor or rafting up, I always looked to Nick to take the helm.  As we are planning to go into Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour for two weeks in January, I realised I have to step up and become a true ‘first mate’.

I joined four other fantastic women last Tuesday night for a really interesting evening.  Doing figure-eights on the Derwent with squeals of laughter, a mock man overboard, maneuvering up to a buoy and a scenario of running out of fuel and having to call in a ‘Pan Pan Pan’.

We then hit the papers and theory component (with a bottle of Jansz to aid our learning) where we all passed our written exam.  I now know the difference between Cardinal and Lateral markers, a Pan Pan Pan and a Mayday, and the importance of wearing the appropriate PFD.

Now it’s time for stepping up on ‘Spellbound‘ and to reach my ultimate goal of going away for the night with only a few girlfriends on board!  xx

Show Weekend : Boat Weekend

Sunset at Partridge Island

The Hobart Show weekend always allows for an extra long weekend where we escape Hobart to explore further waters.  This year was no exception and we headed to South Bruny Island for four glorious days.

We left on Thursday morning and enjoyed a smooth voyage to Partridge Island, some three hours later, to catch up with our friends.  Arriving to an oasis of turquoise blue waters due to a phytoplankton bloom in the water at this time of year.  Blue, blue waters, radiant rainbows and a gorgeous sunset.  What more could we ask for?

Partridge Island

The next day we went for a walk on the island where we discovered signs of European gardens and mature oak trees.  We  moved over to Mickey’s Bay in the afternoon and had a big roast pork on board ‘Mistraal‘.  The next morning we donned our packs and walked over to Cloudy Lagoon where James fell asleep as usual, and Poppy did a stellar job walking most of the way and learning more native plants.

In the afternoon we went to Tailors Beach for a picnic with all our boating friends and the kids were in their element making sand castles and playing in the water until little teeth were chattering and I had run out of dry clothes.

I love being in my happy place with my family and our amazing friends.  Not to mention the breathtaking scenery of this part of the world.  xx

Would you like cracked pepper?

Menu Salt & Pepper Grinders

Nick gave me these divine Menu Bottle Grinders for my birthday after a little hint in his ear and I use any excuse just to grind a little cracked pepper over our food!

Bottle Grinders look nothing like the salt and pepper grinders you’re used to. And that’s the whole plan. To create something noticeable and to change a well-known thing into something brand new – as a way to encourage people to try new things.

“We wanted to steer far away from the predictable grinders and instead encourage people to experiment with spices, grains, seeds and all the other modern cuisine ingredients. The new powerful ceramic grinder allows you to be more creative,” says designer Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen from Norm. The grinders have a powerful ceramic grinder, and they are very easy to operate. You simply open them, fill them with delicious ingredients and close them again. Simple as that.

The unique, inverted design ensures that salt, pepper, pumpkin seeds, dried blueberries, walnuts – or whatever you fill them with – only sprinkle out when you grind, leaving no trace on the table or in the kitchen. The Grinders have a bottle like shape, which is also important to the whole experience. Designer Kasper Rønn, “From a shape like this, you’d expect the content to be something liquid like oil or dressing, you’re not at all expecting dried up spices or nuts. We used this shape to surprise and somewhat trick the users. Sometimes people need a bit of a surprise in order to change their habits”. Menu Bottle Grinders have a rounded base that fits perfectly into the hands, and have a rubber surface that’s easy to grip and to clean. They come in a range of beautiful, soft Scandinavian colors. Bon appétit.

Open Day

Open Day

Ten pirates (little and big), one boat, good food and several bottles of sparkling wine, equals a fantastic day on the water to celebrate Open Day and the start of the sailing season in Hobart on Saturday.

After the official sail past, and a long lunch in the sun we continued onto Kings Pier where we stayed on board for the night with our other boating friends.  We dined at Fish Frenzy for dinner, had a big sleep and went for breakfast at T42 in the morning, all within a hop, skip and jump from the marina.

Hobart turned it on once again with fantastic weather – I just love this time of year.

Boating and Birthdays

Birthday Drinks at T42

We have enjoyed another busy week which has included more time away on the boat last weekend and celebrating my birthday on Monday.

We headed away to Bruny Island for two nights and despite the windy forecast we hunkered down in the sheltered waters at Quarantine.  We ran into our friends and their girls and manage to watch the AFL Football Grand Final together as the temperature soared and the girls cooled off in the water.

On Sunday we had lunch at Apollo Bay and enjoyed the slightly cooler temperatures before cruising back to the yacht club in the afternoon.

On Monday I enjoyed being spoilt for my birthday.  Poppy was definitely more excited about my ‘turning of age’ than I was and proceeded to let everyone at Child Care know how old I was turning!  I whipped up a cake and saw their delight in singing and blowing out the candles for me.  Nick and I ventured out for a drink at T42 and an amazing dinner at The Glasshouse on such a mild evening.

I love this time of year and we so we have been out enjoying our garden which is in full bloom – the wisteria, oak tree and jasmine are all bursting with Spring.  We went for a big walk along the beach this morning on yet another perfect Hobart day.  Xx
