UNIQLO ♥

UNIQLOAfter my trip to Melbourne I am now loving UNIQLO – the fabulous clothing store with its iconic logo, a distinctive Japanese flavour and the best customer service I have experienced for some time:

Our name comes from the words ‘unique’ and ‘clothing’ – simple and clever, just like our clothes, which are world-famous for being high-quality, innovative, functional and affordable.

From one store in Hiroshima, Japan in 1984, we have grown to more than 1300 stores in 15 countries. Through Asia, London, the USA and Europe, our life-enhancing apparel has been embraced and loved by all.

To keep such high standards and reasonable prices, we design and manufacture every single item ourselves, although we do like to collaborate with interesting and inspiring people.

One could be perturbed by all those down jackets thinking it was just another outdoor store, but don’t give up because after a bit of digging I came across beautiful soft cashmere jumpers, stylish Oxford shirts in all the colours of the rainbow and these fabulous skinny cords that fit like a glove and were only $29!  Bargain!

Eat : Shop : Laugh

Le Creuset

I’m back to reality now after having a wonderful weekend away in Melbourne with my dear girlfriends.  Welcome home to a brutal 5am wake up thanks to Master James; temper tantrums; numerous runny noses and a refusal of food that landed all over the kitchen floor.  Mmmm … take me back to The European for a loooooong brunch!

The European

I thoroughly enjoyed spending valuable time together with old friends, having many laughs and conversations about the delights and challenges of our lives with young children.

Jo, Jen, Cherida and I ate our way around Melbourne, sampling tasty morsels at the likes of Cumulus Inc.; Spicy Fish; The European; Journal Cafe; The Alchemist Bar; Taxi Kitchen; Cecconi’s and Dumpling Plus (sorry about link overload).  We were immersed in the razzle-dazzle of the Emporium Melbourne Shopping Centre and tried not to do too much damage to our credit cards!

I appreciate these weekends away ever so much and love returning home to my beautiful family after a rejuvenating break.  I also survived my first ever nights away from James –  thank you Nick for a super job with ‘Daddy Daycare’. 💋

Melbourne : Shopping : Girlfriends ♥

Ever the sentimental one – this time exactly two years ago I was in the delightful city of Paris for four days to wander to my heart’s content.  Ah Paris how I miss thee!

Shopping-Paris-Michi-GirlIt may not be Paris, but this morning I am off on my annual trip to Melbourne with the girls.  Jo, Jen, Cherida and I converge on this cultural delight and are swept away with being in a big city, away from the dependable cries of our wee ones and most importantly … being with each other.  💋

Sneaky Peek : Ahoy There

Pirate George

Ahoy there!  I am so sorry for my lack of posts this week – to be honest I am finding it a challenge to keep on top of my daily publishing now that I am back at work!  I think I will only post three times a week instead!

In regards to my recent survey on whether I should accept advertising on The Poppy Files or not, the results are now in and 64% polled NO to advertising!  So there you have it – the people have spoken.

On Monday Poppy, James and I met my friend Sam at The Machine Laundry Cafe for a cuppa in the afternoon.  Poppy was sitting beside the window when she noticed a gentlemen walking past with an eye patch on.  I took a little gasp of air, knowing what was to come and true to form she announced at the top of her voice:

Look Mummy – there’s a PIRATE!

Sammy and I could not stop laughing – a good old belly laugh indeed.  Bless xx.

A Snowy Weekend

Lake Dobson Mt Field

Tasmania experienced such wild weather last week with numerous storms battering the state resulting in flooding, wind damage and the temperature plummeting … brrrrr!

On the plus side, there is lots of snow about and so we went on a mission on Saturday, only to find ourselves at Mt. Field – along with the rest of Hobart (or so it seemed).

Our little snow angels looked so cute all rugged up with their runny noses, being captivated by this foreign environment.  James lolled around in his snow-suit and Poppy and Nick built a snow man and named him ‘Olaf‘.

My sister Janelle, and her family were also visiting Hobart for the weekend.  We had a meal out at T42 on Friday and a dinner party at home on Saturday.  Poppy was very happy to have three ‘big girl cousins’ in the house to play with all night long!

Sunday morning was an absolute cracker and we rugged up once again and went for a spin in the ‘speedy boat’.  Mt. Wellington looked oh so beautiful draped in a shawl of snow … I ♥ winter!

What do you think?

Over the past six months I have been contacted by numerous companies and organisations with proposals to advertise on The Poppy Files.  I have been in two minds about this for some time and wondered what my devoted readers think?

Firstly, the primary function of the The Poppy Files is my creative outlet.  It is also a family memento as we watch our children evolve each day and an account of our life here in Hobart.  I love that the blog is clean and free from flashing advertising trying to compete for your eye and eventually a click to convert unsuspecting readers into thinking they ‘need’ a product or service.

Adversely it continues to surprise me how many of you visit The Poppy Files – I receive an average of 50 visitors a day from all over the world, which is a pittance compared to other blogs but it is humbling to know that people are interested in my account of our life in Tasmania.

So – what do I do?  Part of me is attracted to the idea of monetising my blog if I can, but would I be selling out?  What do you think:

Sneaky Peek : Settlement Secrets

Settlement SecretsNow that I am back at work again, I am teaching a new group of Certificate III Tourism Guiding students and I took them on a fabulous tour in Hobart last week called Settlement Secrets.

Thanks to our tour guide – Colin Dean, who provided a perfect mix of interesting characters, intriguing stories, audience participation and some good old-fashioned humour.  I would highly recommend you jump on this tour as you will learn so much about Hobart in an entertaining way, plus have special access to those ‘out of the way’ places in the museum.  Thanks Colin!

Nestled in the heart of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery are the earliest buildings that still exist following first European settlement of Hobart, 1804. “Settlement Secrets” is a theatrical journey amongst these buildings and more.

Step back in time with an invitation to meet with the Lt Governor, Sir John Eardley-Wilmot, in his private secretary’s cottage.

Stroll through the basement of the Bond Store and learn the secrets of early settlement from an escaped convict turned bushranger who….”shouldn’t really be here”!

Secrets and Cover-ups: The magnificent new Custom House….is it really what it seems?

Meet the man who built it and discover its hidden secrets. Pass through the front door beneath the statues that herald Federation and stand in the inner courtyard that spans the decades between 1824 and 1901.

History and Entertainment intertwined: “Settlement Secrets” is the best way to explore these amazing buildings and to hear the stories about those who forged Hobart’s heritage from convict beginnings in 1804 to Federation, 1901. The theatrical style in which this journey is presented brings the site to life in an entertaining and informative way.

Cousin ♥

Pops

Nick went away for his annual winter boys boat weekend and I took Poppy and James to Launceston to meet their new baby cousin – Lily.  We stayed with Nick’s parents where Poppy played ‘elastics’, enjoyed craft and read lots of books with her Bea Bea and Bear!

We visited my parents and also had lunch with my sister, Janelle and her three girls.  Poppy was in her element playing with her cousins with a bounty of ballerina and princess costumes at her disposal.

On return, we caught up at the IXL Atrium for a coffee with my other sister Cath.  It was a fun family weekend, but we were all very excited to see ‘Daddy’ return home yesterday afternoon.  Xx

Sneaky Peek : Speedy Boat

Watermans Dock - Hobart

Saturday in Hobart was the quintessential winter’s day.  A clear, frosty morning making way for the most beautiful still day.

No Saturday sleep-in for our household with Poppy and James up and at ’em by 6:30am.  After mooching about at home for a while we decided to head out for breakfast, only to realise T42 didn’t open for another half-an-hour!  Like desperadoes, we went for a wander to the Salamanca Market and returned to savour a hearty breakfast.

My boat-loving husband has just taken his hobby to a whole new level and picked up a steal on Gumtree with this 1978 original Pride Cheetah fibreglass boat, or as Poppy calls it:

Daddy’s speedy boat!

Nick justified his purchase by admitting it was a present for James’ 1st birthday.  Mmmmmm – I’m not sure about that??

We all piled into this little beauty from the 70’s, complete with orange vinyl ‘back-to-back’ seats and took it for a spin on a beautifully calm Derwent River.  The Captain was very happy because:

A:  His daughter kept asking him to go faster

B:  His son fell into a deep slumber en route

C:  His reticent wife had a smirk on her face!

Looks like we will be water-skiing and wake-boarding this summer!
