Icena Farm Stay

Icena

My extended family all met at Icena Farm Accommodation for the ANZAC Day Long Weekend.  A farming family going on holidays to a another farm … classic!

Nick and I broke up our journey and stayed in Launceston on Friday night – where the Autumn leaves and light were amazing, before venturing out to Icena the next morning.

Icena is located on the far north-eastern tip of Tasmania – a special place for me as an amazing camping spot when I was younger, and later where I was a guide on the Bay of Fires Walk for several years.  Nick also had a family farm in the district when he was growing up and my brother spent many years harvesting on the Rushy Lagoon property.

In my opinion the region has it all – beautiful beaches, rolling green hills, bushwalks and even a wind farm!  The weather was absolutely glorious and we really did have an amazing time.

We had a cooking roster where you were allocated a meal and a sibling or brother/sister-in-law to cook with.  As a result, it was a very relaxing weekend apart from when you were in the kitchen cooking your assigned meal.

We had some fun and games on our last night, pulling out some hilarious masks that I bought years ago at The Louvre in Paris.  Masks that always add a little bit of humour in any situation.  Xx

Five Years Old

Poppy

Our baby girl turned 5 year’s old on Tuesday!

Poppy's 5th Birthday

It is hard to remember our life without her.  She is in absolute joy to be around and has changed so much in the last year.  Now that she is at Kindergarten she has a new found zest for knowledge and continually asks many, many questions.  Like this one just now:

Is there only one sun in the whole-wide-world?  Is it even bigger than this house?  Even bigger than a skyscraper?  Wow that’s big Mum!

As part of her birthday celebrations we went along to the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Family Classics Series to see Babe in Concert.  Both James and Poppy enjoyed it, even though they found it a little scary in some parts.  I am pleased to be able to expose them to the wonders of classical music at a young age, as I still get chills the moment the orchestra begins.

On Sunday she had a few of her Kindergarten friends around for a party.  With a Frozen Piñata, Pass the Parcel and cake … she exclaimed that it was the ‘BEST birthday party EVER’!

On her actual birthday she visited Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary as part of her School Holiday Program, and we went out to Fish Frenzy for some early fish and chips.

I am looking forward to the next five years and cast my mind back regularly to those early days when we first met each other.  Bless!  xx

Bruny Island Boating

Butlers Beach Detail - Bruny Island

I returned from the Bay of Fires on Friday afternoon and Nick had all the food and gear packed, ready to head away on the boat for the Long Weekend!

We joined Nick’s folks on their boat instead (a long story) and met up with our friends on South Bruny Island.  With predominately overcast skies and moody light we walked along desolate beaches, made giant sand castles, ate nice food, slept well and flew kites.

Another beautiful boating weekend to a beautiful island. Xx

Pattern Play

Pattern Play

We have had a busy time in the past week since returning from Jackson Hole.

It has been so beautiful being back home with our little family and even though I didn’t miss the numerous loads of washing, school lunches and bedtime battles whilst away, there certainly is no place like home.

Last Friday I took Poppy and James to enjoy Pattern Play at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery:

Pattern Play

An interactive family exhibition celebrating the wonderful world of patterns, Pattern Play incorporates two exhibitions: Jemima Wyman: Pattern Bandits, a Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Touring Exhibition, and Patterns in Nature, an exhibition drawing on TMAG’s own rich collections.

Pattern Play

It was fantastic and I especially loved the Patterns in Nature Exhibition:

Patterns in Nature highlights the many spectacular patterns that occur in the natural world – spots and stripes, spirals and speckles, natural number patterns and patterns of behaviour are all elements that can form the patterns we see every day.

It uses items from TMAG’s much-loved science collections and interactive elements to engage visitors with the patterns that occur in nature, with particular reference to Tasmanian plants and animals.

Pattern Play

We had a day trip on the boat on Saturday with family and friends and then an expiring voucher for Frank Restaurant inspired a family lunch on Sunday.  Sublime!  xx

First Day of School

First day

Our little Poppy started Kindergarten today at Waimea Heights Primary School!

I couldn’t believe how grown up she looked all decked out in her new school uniform!  Time really does fly from when she was a chubby little bubba.  Sob sob … what an amazing journey it has been so far!  Xx

Game : Set : Match

Hobart International

There’s nothing quite like a great weekend full of social activities including international sporting events, 40th Birthday parties and a day on the boat with old friends.

On Saturday we enjoyed the Hobart International Tennis Women’s final with our old friends, Keith and Lil who were visiting from Launceston.  Enjoying the delights of a sunny day, a corporate box, a lovely lunch and an Esky full of Morilla’s finest, what wasn’t there to enjoy?  Well, Eugenie Bouchard didn’t win, but it was a great game and a fantastic location to watch the tennis from.

We rushed home, said ‘hi and bye’ to the kids (and my sister who was babysitting), and a quick outfit change before scooting off to Depha’s 40th Birthday at the Avalon City Retreat.  Nick and I met each other through Depha, so she is a very special friend to both of us.  Beautiful food, more bubbles, good conversations and even a boogie, saw us returning home just before turning into pumpkins.

On Sunday we took Keith, Lil and their gorgeous brood to Bruny Island for the day on the boat.  Lazing in the sun chatting, fishing, paddle boarding and eating was just what the doctor ordered.  Oh how I love these summer days spent with wonderful friends.  Xx

Christmas Festivities

Happy New Year!  We have had such a festive time since my last post, celebrating Christmas and New Year with both of our families in beautiful places.

We drove to the north of Tasmania to enjoy a pre-Christmas lunch with my family, on the farm.  It felt delicious being surrounded by everyone who had migrated home for this time of year (my sister Cath from exploring Europe for six months and Robby from Castlemaine).

The kids swam in the pool, were spoilt by their grandmother and enjoyed freshly picked raspberries from her garden.  As always, I enjoyed a little too much of my sister-in-law’s fab Rocky Road!  I just can’t stop at one piece.

Sisters

Returning to Hobart, preparations began for our boating trip away.  The boat was finally packed for a week full of adventures with food, clothing and Christmas presents.  We left early on the 23rd December to Stewart’s Bay where smooth waters allowed an enjoyable four-hour trip, and we arrived to the solitude of white sand and blue waters.

Nick’s family arrived the next day (by boat and car) and the days morphed into time at the beach, swimming, stand-up paddle boarding, laying in the sun, eating, drinking champagne, opening presents, talking and just relaxing.

Poppy was overwhelmed with how Santa actually delivered a bike to her on the boat.  We were too!  It must have had something to do with the platter left out for the busy man and his reindeer on Christmas eve, consisting of carrots, biscuits and a Cascade Draught!

It was lovely to celebrate Christmas whilst being away on the boat and being surrounded by a gorgeous family in a such a stunning setting.  Xxx

Government House Christmas Party

Government House

We were fortunate to be invited to a Christmas Party at Government House last night due to old family connections with Nick’s parents.  On arrival the kids were off and running in their ‘Sunday Best’.

Government House

They were beside themselves to find a blow up maze, face painting, music, carols, acrobats and an adventurous elf abseiling off the clock tower to deliver a sack full of presents to the main man in red.

Being in the gorgeous gardens in this stunning setting with my family, listening to carols and seeing Poppy, James and their cousins so happy, definitely gave me a festive cheer!  Xx

Pre-Christmas Craziness

Aloft

Another busy week has passed with a range of Christmas activities.

On Tuesday I went to Aloft – a new waterfront restaurant in Hobart, with two of my friends from Mother’s Group where we enjoyed the divine view of the Derwent on dusk.

Thursday was a glorious day where the garden at home beckoned, including running under the sprinkler and planting flower gardens (literally).  That night, we had our Day Care Family Fun Night where Poppy sang a couple of carols with her friends.  There was face painting, balloon art and sausages.  What more could you want?

On Friday we enjoyed rainbows, cooking and super slides down the stairs.  On Sunday we caught up with friends to eat ice-cream at the park and in the afternoon a (slow) bushwalk around Knocklofty where Poppy is learning more of her native plants.

Poppy (and Nick) have become slightly obsessed with the Peppa Pig Doctor’s Kit and have been using poor James as their patient to practice their bandaging!  He has been very obliging!
