Strong Political Women ♥

Today I am loving strong political women in light of last night’s political events in Australia.

I know the above photo did the rounds on Facebook last year but I still love it! It shows Licia Ronzulli, a Member of the European Parliament from Italy with her six-week old daughter Victoria, voting at Strasbourg.

Her baby snuggled very contentedly against her chest, swaddled in a simple sling. According to The Daily Mail,  Ms. Ronzulli occasionally looked down from the proceedings to give her daughter a little kiss on the forehead.

When Poppy was a baby I was a Committee Member for Women in Tourism Tasmania and I remember taking her to meetings in the Baby Bjorn.  I must admit, I did find it quite difficult to concentrate on agenda items and certainly wasn’t  like ‘cool-cat’ Licia here!

In closing – like her or loathe her you can’t help admire Julia Gillard for her tenacity to rise to the top in a male dominated political sphere.  Oh dear – here we go again with Kevin ’07!

Sneaky Peek : 9 – 5

This is a pretty boring photo to share with you, but this has been my desk for many years and today is my last day before I finish up for a year’s Maternity Leave.

I have mixed feelings about signing off this afternoon – I am physically ready to finish work as I have been finding it to be quite demanding in the later stages of my pregnancy.  I will however, really miss my amazing colleagues and students.  I will also miss actually going to work and feeling like I am contributing in other ways than being a full-time Mum.

When I had my Maternity Leave with Poppy, I didn’t appreciate just how many people come across your path in your normal work day until I didn’t have that exposure anymore.

I have really loved my job for the past ten years and am ready for the new addition of our family –  sometimes I just find being a full-time Mum a little isolating.  I’m sure I will man-up!

Yum : Mulled Wine-Braised Beef

I found this recipe in my recent Australian House & Garden magazine and although I haven’t made it yet, it looks perfect for this time of year and is on my list to try it out.

Mulled Wine-Braised Beef

  • 2 kg beef oyster blade, trimmed and cut into 8 even pieces
  • 1 L fruity red wine
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 onions, peeled and cut into chunks or wedges
  • 2 carrots, peeled and cut into 6
  • 2 sticks celery, roughly chopped
  • 1 head garlic, unpeeled, cut in half
  • 2 dried bay leaves
  • Zest of 2 oranges
  • 8 sprigs thyme
  • 2/3 cup (100g) flour, browned in oven
  • 2L good-quality beef stock
  • 4 cloves
  • 6 cinnamon quills
  • 1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg

Method

  • Place beef in a bowl with 500 ml wine. Cover and refrigerate overnight
  • Drain beef and discard wine. Lay beef on paper towel and pat dry
  • Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large, heavy-based saucepan over high heat. Cook beef in batches until browned all over, about 2-3 mins.Remove to a plate
  • Add remaining oil to same pan and reduce heat to medium
  • Add onion, carrot and celery and garlic and cook until golden
  • Increase heat to high and add remaining wine, bay leaves, orange zest and thyme; simmer until reduced to a syrup, about 15 mins
  • Reduce heat to low and stir in flour. Add stock, bring to the boil, skim, season and add beef and spices
  • Simmer 2 hrs or until beef is tender, skimming occasionally
  • Remove meat, pass sauce through a strainer into another saucepan. Return liquid to the boil; add meat and warm through to serve
  • Serves 8

Ice Baby

Brrr … winter is here with the temperature plummeting over the weekend. We experienced a couple of very frosty mornings whilst staying at Mum & Dad’s, and Poppy and her cousin Jessie were very intrigued with the ice that formed over Mum’s fish pond!

This is my last week of work before I start my maternity leave.  I am looking forward to ‘handing over’ my tasks to my colleague Mark, and then being able to fully nest at home!  xx

Farm Girl

Our little ‘city slicker’ is spending four days with me on our family farm at Hagley!

Poppy donned her gumboots, gloves and hat this morning for a lovely wander around the sheds, orchard and old buildings. Xx

Hobart ♥

Today I am loving Hobart!

I grew up in northern Tasmania and have lived in Hobart since 2005.  I have always been aware of the North/South:Launceston/Hobart divide with parochial comments about either place, depending on where you were from.

I find both areas/cities so beautiful.  Launceston nestling into it’s valley bowl, encompassed by the surrounding hills, beautiful architecture, parks and gardens.  Hobart perched on the edge of the southern oceans with Mt Wellington dominating the city skyline.

I have found Hobart has totally ‘spunked up’ over the past 5 years. There are so many amazing new cafes, restaurants, shops, festivals and of course we have to mention the ‘MONA effect’.

My favourite things about Hobart include:

So today, I just wish to share the love for my city!  xx

Sneaky Peek : The Red Queen

My friend Annabelle and I always joke about having FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and this week we have both suffered from a little FOMO from MOFO (not being able to go to all the winter festivities due to work/child responsibilities)!

However, Cath and I did go to the opening night of The Red Queen at MONA last night (sorry Belle):

Mona‘s major exhibition opens tonight, with free entry for all. We are doing away with the hoity-toity tomfoolery and throwing our doors open till midnight instead. There will be food and music, as always; when you’ve eaten and drunk and danced there’s always the art… The Red Queen is an assemblage of major commissions, exciting loans, and yet-unseen works from our own collection.

I was very proud of myself – there I was on a school night at 33 weeks pregnant grooving away to the DJ in the museum.  I felt like we were in a funky nightclub in New York!

NB:  Apologies for the late post today.  This dirty stop out got home at 11.45 pm last night – far too late for any blog posting!!

Yum : Apple Crumble

This recipe is another family favourite and one that I just love.  Try it out – a perfect desert for a cold winter’s night. Apple Crumble Granny Smith Apples – peeled, quartered and finely sliced Sugar Vanilla concentrate Topping 1 cup plain flour 1 cup shredded coconut 1 cup brown sugar Butter Method Wash, cut

Dark MOFO Opening Night

On Friday Annabelle & I rugged up our tribe and went to the Dark MOFO Winter Festival Opening Night at the Queens Domain.  It was a cold, drizzly evening but it was so fun to be out and about with Poppy, Lilly & Ollie to see the amazing Spectra:

RYOJI IKEDA

SPECTRA

Let there be light.
-Genesis 1:3.

Imagine a tower of pure, white light, reaching fifteen kilometres into the Hobart sky above the Domain. At the base of the tower, forty-nine custom-made Xenon searchlights are set into the ground in a seven-by-seven grid; combined, they point a fleshless finger at our town straight down, it seems, from some sort of imagined, omniscient seat in the sky.

Sine waves – the purest kind of sound wave – form invisible sonic patterns at the base; your movement alters their composition in a way that only you can specify. Indeed, your experience is unlike your friends’, or anyone else’s at all. Now, stop imagining, and wait until nightfall.

Poppy was quite enamoured with the ‘rainbow’ in the sky!

Comprehension & Articulation

Each day Poppy amazes me with the sentences she now articulates.  In the past month her comprehension and speech has expanded by the day. Yesterday we were stuck in traffic on our way home and Poppy was waving to the lady in the car next to us.  I mentioned that it was really nice to
