A Winter Holiday … Skiing

Mt. Hotham

We waved goodbye to Nick’s parents and their boat in Sydney and began our homeward journey via Mt. Hotham in Victoria, as we were bringing their vehicle back to Tasmania.

Our big road trip began after a few stressful moments of getting out of Sydney with ‘Siri’ letting us down (or was that me trying to navigate the M5?) and were finally on the open road, heading for Canberra.

We sang, pointed out passing sheep and cows and made animal noises.  Pops and James did surprisingly well in the car and both had big sleeps along the way.  We stayed in Canberra for the night and left bright and early for the next 6 hours of driving to Mt. Hotham, where we were meeting Nick’s brother’s and their families.

Mt Hotham

Dropping into Bright for all the essentials for the weekend, we finally made it to the mountain on Friday afternoon.  Settling into our little lodge for the night and catching up with family, it was great to be finally out of the car.  We were up and ready to go the next morning with Poppy all decked out in her pink skis and boots (it’s all about the colour pink at the moment) and off she went to Ski School with her cousin, Maggie.  She was excited beyond belief.

Nick and I managed to ski/board together for the morning and I found my groove on the snowboard again, after not boarding since having Poppy.  With a blue bird day and good snow cover, it was hard to wipe the smile off our faces.

We spent time in the afternoon playing in the snow and the next day Poppy and James were in Ski School/care again, which enabled Nick and I to enjoy more runs together with Will, Tup and George.

Mt. Hotham

We picked up Poppy from Ski School and enjoyed several runs with her.  I had a ‘proud-Mum’ moment when the three of us jumped on the chair-lift together for the very first time.  She managed to make it down ‘Easy Street‘ (a gentle green run) for most of the way on her own.  I am continually amazed how quickly children pick up new skills – she will be faster than us in no time!

I love being in the mountains and this weekend was no exception – it definitely is my happy place and I feel so at home having spent many years working in the ski-industry and boarding on many beautiful mountains around the world.  Seeing Poppy on the snow further consolidated its importance to me and I hope to spend more time skiing with our family in the future.

We bid farewell to Mt. Hotham the next morning as the snow continued to fall out of the sky.  Until next year beautiful mountain!  Xx

A Winter Holiday … Boating

IMG_9762

The next part of our holiday was spent with Nick’s parents on their boat in Sydney Harbour.  A total treat to share quality time together whilst experiencing new waters and amazing scenery.  Barb and John are cruising the east coast of Australia over the winter months before returning home to Tasmania at Christmas time.

We stayed on the boat for two nights and explored different playgrounds and parks during the day.  We also enjoyed a cruise out through the heads, back into the harbour and under the bridge, which was a fantastic experience.

Barb and John even offered to babysit one night whilst Nick and I zipped off across the bay in the dingy to Doyles for dinner after our peeps were tucked up in bed.   We brushed the sand off our feet and donned our fancy footwear before entering this classic seafood establishment in Watson’s Bay.

We had a wonderful time on the water and Poppy and James loved hanging out with their grandparents.  xx

A Winter Holiday … in Sydney

Sydney

I’m back – geographically and electronically.  Back in Hobart and back on The Poppy Files after a couple of weeks break.

We have had a fantastic family holiday in Sydney, Mt. Hotham and Melbourne.  Not without some challenges (as you would expect travelling with two young children aged four and two) but it was lovely to spend quality time with our  peeps and we enjoyed many amazing experiences together.

We flew to Sydney for the Sydney International Boat Show with our good friends, Brett, Jacinta and their girls.  This was my first ever boat show and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but basically it is a showcase of all the hot new boats out there on the market.  We ‘oohed’ and ‘aarghed’ over numerous moter cruisers and yachts, with our favourite being a 54 ft Moody Decksaloon.

We spent a couple of days at the boat show and then continued to enjoy the delights of Sydney – that blue, blue sky and the warmth unknown to us in our southern home at this time of year.  Shopping, time at the zoo, another sushi train – it really was delightful.

After this we met up with Nick’s parents and went … boating.  More on that tomorrow, but in the meantime here are a few snapshots of the boat show and our time in the city.

The-Mexican-Dress

I saw this dress on Inez Daily last week and just love it.  So perfect in every way, especially on that dark beauty.

I’m taking a break from The Poppy Files for a couple of weeks as we are going on a wee family holiday and I am a little bit excited.  Xxx

Our little farmer James loved hanging out with his cousins on their farm in Northern Tasmania at the weekend, but his favourite were all their ‘pets’.  Bless. xx

French Terry Playsuit ♥

Paddo To PalmyJust saying “French Terry Playsuit” immediately whisks me away from my southern hemisphere Ugg boots and long-johns to the delights of Paris.  I love this little number from Paddo to Palmy:

Your one stop shop for an all in one outfit that earns extra points for being as comfortable as it is stylish.

Made from French Terry with a vintage inspired three-quarter tie up sleeve this playsuit will take you from the beach to the restaurant with ease.

Impeccably tailored it features a built in knotted belt that will cinch in your waist and generous culotte shaped shorts will flatter your pegs.

How beautiful is this photo from their Instagram feed of @maisieandthesevenseas admiring the Opera Building in Paris wearing her playsuit?

Ah … bring on summer!

2 Years Old

James' 2nd Birthday

Our little James turned two on Monday.  It is hard to believe how different he is to when he was born, weighing in at 2.030 kg.  He was skin and bones but now look at him – a little bruiser who is chatting more and more by the day and has been nicknamed – Strongman.  💪

He loves his little Gumby and so I made him a Gumby cake, complete with green icing (sorry Mum’s)!  He had a special day with lots of presents and cuddles.  Happy Birthday little man.  xx

Salt : Pepper ♥

Menu Salt & Pepper Grinder

Today I am loving these Menu Salt & Pepper Grinders available from Norsu Interiors:

Menu’s new Bottle Grinder is built for performance with a clear ambition to intrigue your senses. It leaves a powerful first impression due to sheer size and intensity but Menu has spiced up the grinder experience by flirting with the unconventional shape of a bottle.
An upside down design secures that salt or pepper sprinkles out, when you grind only. This way the grinder leaves no marks of salt or pepper on the table or in the kitchen.
  • Minimalistic bottle design
  • Grinder located on top
  • Coarseness adjustment by turning
  • Solid handle
Menu’s Bottle Grinder is powered by a durable performance ceramic grinder and comes in natural Scandinavian colours.

Birthdays : Festivals

Hobart

Another winter festival in Hobart … another birthday.  We stayed on the boat in the city on Friday night to celebrate my husband’s 40th and went along to the Bonfire and Big Sing as part of the Festival of Voices.

Hobart turned out in droves to stand around a massive fire and belt out a tune or two.  I love seeing everyone out and about and rugged up, even when the temperature gauge is in the single digits.  Hobart continues to inspire.  Xx
