Sneaky Peek : The Great Commute

Great Commute

I’m not referring to the two-hour commute in your car, on the train or bike to work each day.  No, I am referring to the 20 metre walk from our house to the garage that I do numerous times a day – baby in arms, keys in mouth and bags, bags, bags on my arms.  What is in all these bags?

Pfffff no gym membership required here, as my combined total lift weight would be nudging 15 kilos with each trip.  Just when you think your arms are going to drop off Poppy chimes in with “Mummy, can you carry my bag, it’s too heavy”!  “SURE HONEY”!

Excuse the poor quality of my sketch – scanned via iPhone and I have also just realised my proportions are sightly out (small head, small waist, big feet and perty boobs … yeah right)!

Sneaky Peek : Grumpy Mummy

Little MonkeysHmmmmpph – now I know why you should be having children in your 20’s, not your 40’s!  These little monkeys are making me grumpy!

I guess that’s what happens when you have numerous nights without much sleep.  James’ bottom teeth still haven’t made an appearance yet but ‘appear’ to be giving him lots of pain which equals lots of crying which equals grumpy Mummy.

Airport

On another note – I am thankful that Nick returned home safely from his skiing holiday last Friday.  Poppy was beside herself with excitement at the airport, and couldn’t wait to give her Daddy a big ‘snowy cuddle’.  She was very excited about the Moose he gave her, plus her Jackson Hole lip balm and survival kit!  I was pretty happy with my Chanel No 5 too.

Nick couldn’t believe the difference he saw in James with two weeks absence.  James is more like a little boy as he is now on the move and is rolling all over the floor.  He is also self-feeding on toast, carrots, asparagus and potatoes and makes a hell of a mess but loves it!  Poppy has even taken on the big sister role and requests to feed him (whilst making the obligatory airplane noise).

James

On Monday of the long weekend we had a day trip to Bruny Island on the boat.  Poppy had another super day playing with crabs, making sand castles and idolising her big friends.  James on the other hand refused to have his day time sleep and drove his Mum crazy!  Nothing a little Chanel No 5 won’t fix.  X

Sneaky Peek : Ski Envy

Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole

Nick has had an amazing time skiing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for the past two weeks and has timed his visit perfectly as they have had an incredible amount of snow:

A Sneaky Situation that Drops Almost Two Feet of Powder

Posted February 25, 2014

This February has been nicknamed ‘Stormuary’ by some of the locals in Jackson Hole. Storms keep rolling in one after another. The weather has been unrelenting, dropping copious amounts of powder practically every day.

After three weeks of snow, to top it off, on February 23rd, we received 19” in 24 hours with 15” falling after the lifts closed. To say it was deep was an understatement.

I also received this message from Nick yesterday:

OMG If I never ski again I would be happy with what I have done!

Mmmm … envious!  Here are some of his photos and a video of a dude to tempt those ski bums amongst us, to grab our gear and get on the next plane bound for North America to ski the deeps!

Jackson Hole

My husband flies out to Jackson Hole in Wyoming tomorrow for two weeks of skiing and I am very excited for him (and maybe very jealous too)!

He is going to catch up with his old mate Pat, who has been living there all winter with his family and I am sure they will have a fantastic time.  Poppy, James and I will look forward to speaking with him via FaceTime.

Here are some of my favourite photos of my man on the slopes on previous trips to New Zealand. Xx

Sneaky Peek : Gro Clock

Gro Clock

It is no secret that I love my sleep and I was always so relieved that Poppy was ‘good sleeper’ where she would sleep solidly from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am each night with a good two hours after lunch!  We put in the hard yards early on and I was quite over the top with her routine, but it did pay off.  Thankfully James also seems to like his sleep (so far)!?

However since Christmas, Poppy has been quite the challenge at bedtime, she battles with her lunch time sleep and is now waking up early!  What happened to my ‘good sleeper’?

In the evening every excuse under the sun is given for why she can’t settle into her bed:

Mummy, I need some water

Mummy, I want another story

Mummy, why don’t we play a game?

Mummy, where are my pink rings?

Grrrrrr …. just go to sleep!

I was getting frustrated so resorted to the Gro Clock:

How do you get your children to understand when it’s time to get up? SIMPLE “stay in bed until you see the sun!” This updated version of the Gro-clock uses fun images of the stars and sun to communicate when to go back to sleep and when it’s time to get up.

So far we have had limited success with it – Nick and I both became quite frustrated with trying to set the initial times and then the next morning Poppy pulled the plug out and brought the clock into my room to show me (and of course it needs a power supply).  But yesterday morning she did wake at 6:30 am but went back to bed until the ‘sun came up’.  I will keep persevering with it, but she still is a good sleeper and I should thank my lucky stars!

Sneaky Peek : Illustration

Poppy Large

Today I wish to share with you a beautiful illustration of Poppy by the very talented Gabrielle Mitchell.  You will see I have embedded the image into my header and so The Poppy Files will have a new look and feel for 2014!

In closing, here are a couple of quotes from our Poppy this morning:

Mummy, when I grow up can I have hearing aids like you?  (Bless)

Mummy, when I grow up I am going to have a baby and I am going to call it:  Mummy Baby

Sneaky Peek : Inbox Inertia

Screen shot 2014-01-29 at 12.32.13 PM

I have just popped James in his cot and grabbed five minutes to sort out my inbox, but have realised I need half an hour to deal with the overflowing email subscriptions!  Or maybe I will just make lunch and leave it for another day?

It has made me realise that perhaps I need to refine my subscriptions as l feel overwhelmed trying to read each email before yet another one ‘peeps’ in.

Est MagazineEach week I have a healthy dose of:

I scan my inbox each morning looking for lovely ‘personal’ emails from friends or family and to be honest, overlook the rest.  2014 is the year of the cull.  Now … who’s first?  I love them all!

Who do you subscribe to?

Sneaky Peek : Sunny Sarah

The perfect temperature

It is the perfect temperature in Hobart right at this moment in time!  I LOVE it – none of this crazy 38ºC like last Friday.  To top off this stellar weather, my oldest school friend – Sarah came to stay with us last night!

I absolutely love being in the company of old friends that you have shared a lot of history with – it’s almost like slipping on an old comfy jumper.  There is so much familiarity you finish each others’ sentences, you start conversations with: “Remember when we …” and you can be brutally honest with one another.

I have very fond memories of our friendship when we met in 1987 at Launceston College.  Big hair, multiple converse socks worn with masseur sandals and over-sized Balance jumpers were the cutting edge fashion of the day (oh really)?  We would cruise to the east coast of Tasmania in my orange Volkswagen beetle, dropping in at her family farm on the way to raid the pantry and spend hours on isolated beaches with the whitest of sand.  U2’s Rattle & Hum would be played relentlessly on the ‘tape deck’, followed by Guns & Roses and a bit of Spy V’s Spy!

Luckily we have moved on from there, but our friendship has stayed the same.  We don’t need to speak often but when we do catch up, it’s just like wearing that comfy old jumper again … it just feels right!

Sneaky Peek : On Order …

Macbook Pro

After putting up with my trusty old MacBook that has never been right since my IT glitch last February, I have ordered a new MacBook Pro laptop!  No more waiting for ever for photos to download, webpages to open and a trackpad that only worked on one side.  Excited!

Sneaky Peek : Peter Stuyvesant International 2013

Jen, Manni, Me & Rob

It’s that time of year again where our old gang get together for our ‘tongue in cheek’ sporting event – the Peter Stuyvesant International!  In its seventh year, Saturday the 14th of December 2013 was a decathlon and included the following (well we were two sports short but hey who’s counting?):

  • Boules
  • Tug ‘O War
  • Egg Throw
  • Badminton
  • Orange Run
  • Pictionary
  • Apple Bob
  • Nurf Shoot

The ‘Raqueteers’ (Nick, Alex and Pete) took out the trophy this year and Rob won the ‘Best Dressed’ gong for those pink shorts and that mo!

The highlight of the day for me was seeing Aimee, who is 8 months pregnant giving it her all in the Tug ‘O War!  Hilarious.  Xxx
