Melbourne Mini-Break

There is nothing better than stepping out of your busy routine to escape to the ‘big smoke’ for two days of bliss with your bestie!  That’s exactly what Melissa and I did last Monday and Tuesday for our Spring Melbourne mini-break.

Our trip was perfectly timed with ‘The House of Dior – Seventy Years of Haute Couture‘ exhibition at the NGV.  Even though I grew up as ‘farm-girl-practical’ my Mum trained and worked as a Milliner and is a talented seamstress, so from a young age I was surrounded by beautiful fabrics, haberdashery and sewing.  Walking into the Dior exhibition was a heaven unto itself.

We ate beautiful food, shopped, enjoyed uninterrupted conversations and didn’t have to worry about what to cook for dinner.  I savoured the chance to wander with a friend and to be totally in the present moment.

I am so grateful for my supportive husband for this sacred time away, but I have now come down with the dreaded flu and have been in bed for three days!  Hmmmmpppphhhh!

Matilda ♥

Last Thursday, Poppy and I went to Melbourne for three days with her cousin Maggie and my sister-in-law, Tup.  It was such fun travelling with two little girls, who were so excited about all the little things you tend to take for granted … such as checking in our bags, holding their boarding passes and the ultimate … taking off!

We had some city time before going to Matilda The Musical at the Princess Theatre on Thursday night.  The girls were beside themselves in their pretty dresses, marvelling at the beauty of the theatre, their Dress Circle seats, the amazing set, but mostly their Choc Tops!

The show was absolutely amazing – I recommend anyone to go and see it before it finishes in November.  I even shed a little tear at the end!  The girls were exhausted as they climbed into their beds at their big cousin’s home in Hawthorn.

I really valued spending time with Poppy just on her own – chatting away with her as we wandered through Chadstone on a mission to find her a new pair of Runners (that weren’t too pink)!

The three little cousins had a movie and a ‘midnight feast’ on Friday night, whilst the big sister-in-laws shared a beautiful home cooked meal and a bottle of red!

We had an amazing time away, but we missed our boys at home and it was lovely to see them on our return on Saturday night.  Xx

Melbourne Moments

Larni & Cherida

I have just spent the weekend in Melbourne on my biannual trip with my dear friend Cherida.  We both converge on the Victorian capital from Adelaide and Hobart, for a weekend of bliss.

A weekend where we bid farewell to our little families for three days of freedom and friendship.  These trips represent a little full stop … punctuating our lives for a few days to enable us to catch our breath and to truly reflect and recharge.  Where we enjoy long conversations over cups of tea and exquisite pastries.

My eyes are continually averted to the shiny bright lights of a big city, where we wander with no time limits.  An urban beauty that is such a contrast to my ‘normal’ at home where beautiful beaches, forests and natural scenery are dominant features.  I love the contrast of the glitzy shops, designed spaces, considered lighting, fashion forward thinking and skyscrapers reaching up to the blue, blue sky. xx

A Melbourne Getaway

Melbourne Getaway

I have just had two delicious days in Melbourne with my good friend Cherida.  She flew in from Adelaide to meet me on Monday night and for the next two days we talked, ate, shopped and talked some more.

We ate beautiful food at our old favourites, including The European and Coda.  We sweltered in the 42°c heat on Wednesday, but found relief in the air conditioning of The Emporium!

We were even asked by a photographer from The Age for some candid snaps of us walking through the Block Arcade.  The article about Victoria’s destination for shopping went on-line last night with a couple of lasses featured from interstate!  Classic.  Xx

Replenish

I’m ‘Captain Boring’ at home, preferring to stick to a semi-ordered state of play when it comes to daytime sleep, dinner, bath, book and bed routine.

But sometimes … you just need to jump off that merry-go-round/ground-hog-day and replenish!  To mix it up a bit and have some precious time out with treasured friends and so this weekend was my annual Melbourne trip away and boy-oh-boy, it was so appreciated.

Cherida & I

Saying goodbye to our little chickens on Friday morning, I jetted off to Melbourne to meet the girls.  Cherida flew in from Adelaide and we had the pleasure of hanging out with another friend for the day, before she returned home to her family.  For three days I didn’t have to worry about anyone but myself.

There was no time for thinking – ‘What’s for dinner‘; ‘Have I got enough nappies‘ or ‘I need to make lunches‘.  There was plenty of time however for a leisurely lunch at the Dansk Restaurant with a bottle of bubbles and herring!  An evening stroll through Emporium Melbourne before wandering to our 8:30pm reservation for dinner at Coda.  Yes … 8:30pm, not 5:30pm!

A sleep in … well, a lay in til 8:00am (as I just can’t seem to sleep past 6:30am these days) and then a whole day of following our noses through the city admiring beautiful things and eating amazing food.  A sushi train experience for lunch, followed by more shopping and a refresh before heading out to dinner at 9:00pm!

I loved having time out from the ‘home’ routine, but it was so delightful to see my little family pick me up at the airport on Sunday afternoon.  I couldn’t squeeze their chubby cheeks enough.

Thank you Nicko for looking after the home-front, and taking our little peeps away on the boat to Bruny Island for the night.  Bless.  xx

Poppy’s Perspective

I recently downloaded my Canon IXUS camera (my little point and shoot) and found all these photos that Poppy had taken on our recent trip to Melbourne.

I love seeing the city from her perspective in the stroller and what she captured … unbeknownst to me as I was too busy shopping!  Xx

Just the Girls

MelbourneI’m back!  Poppy and I have just had a girls trip to Melbourne for a mini-break.  It was so special spending time with just her … and so easy!

I finished up work for the year last Thursday and have been looking forward to ‘getting off the island‘ and immersing in a big city with my big girl.  After the excitement of the plane ride we wandered around the city on arrival where I visited all my faves – Hunt Leather, Bassike, Zomp and Emporium Melbourne.  I’m like a homing pigeon when I get to Melbourne – I am released and return back to the same old haunts!

We then met Bron and her boys for a play in Federation Square and that night we stayed with my sister/brother-in-law where Poppy loved playing with her cousins, Maggie and Lily.

On Wednesday morning Tup and I had a sneaky peek in the new Jardan showroom and ogled over all the beautiful furniture.  I met my old friend Sarah at the National Gallery of Victoria where we were immersed in The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier.  Oh my – what a fabulous exhibition – such intricate details.

Poppy and I had a little more shopping in the afternoon where she became the proud new owner of a pink pair of Birkenstocks and then a flight back home to our boys in Hobart!  Lovely.  Xx

The Perfect Break

IMG_7960

My three days in Melbourne with Melissa were sublime!

It was a real luxury to step out of our busy lives to immerse ourselves in a city we love, where we could roam the alleyways, experience sumptuous food, look at beautiful fashion and most importantly … laugh!

I arrived home on Saturday evening to a sleeping toddler, but it was so nice to see Nick and then Poppy the next morning.  She even asked:  “Nice holiday Mummy”?  Daddy may have prompted that question.

On Sunday we went  to T42 for breakfast and then a ‘scoot’ around the docks.  I love being away, but it is so nice coming ‘home’.

Cath and I are having a wonderful time in the ‘big city’. Unfortunately our friend Neil didn’t give us his best on Wednesday night, but it was fantastic to eat at our favourite, the Chocolate Buddha; walk along the South Bank, go to IKEA and enjoy the city. Not to mention the obligatory shoe shopping!
