More Danish ♥

Today I am swooning over more Danish design pieces.

Georg JensenThe first is this Georg Jensen Archive Collection Necklace in Sterling Silver:

An iconic piece of eye-catching jewellery – contemporary design with a nostalgic nod to the past.

Design year: 1965

Secondly, I am loving these beautiful Geo Vacuum Jugs by Normann Copenhagen:geo-vacuum-jug-fs

A minimalistic design featuring masculine, sharp edges fused with bright and lively color combinations. This is the essence of the Geo Vacuum Flask. Geo holds warm and cold drinks in a stylish way.

Geo has a classic and retro-inspired design, and its eccentric and fashion-inspired color combinations make it a new and unexpected impression of a thermos. Use Geo on an outing to the forest, for afternoon tea or on the terrace on a warm summer evening.

The Geo Vacuum Flask holds one liter and comes in the colors purple, grey, black, white, red and turquoise.

Awards:

Red Dot Design Award 2013

German Design Award ”Special Mention” in 2014

You would definitely be channeling your inner ‘Dane’ whilst pouring a hot cuppa and wearing that gorgeous necklace.  X

Sugar ♥

That Sugar Film

Last night I went along to see That Sugar Film and boy-oh-boy, I gave my cupboards a good once over this morning.  We eat quite well at home – incorporating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables into our diet and limiting processed food as much as we can through home-made meals, but I have to admit it is really quite difficult at times.

I am a sucker for hot-cross buns and the odd chocolate treat … all processed and loaded with sugar!  I am keen to improve the food we eat at home and this movie certainly gave the inspiration needed.

THAT SUGAR FILM is one man’s journey to discover the bitter truth about sugar. Damon Gameau embarks on a unique experiment to document the effects of a high sugar diet on a healthy body, consuming only foods that are commonly perceived as ‘healthy’. Through this entertaining and informative journey, Damon highlights some of the issues that plague the sugar industry, and where sugar lurks on supermarket shelves. THAT SUGAR FILM will forever change the way you think about ‘healthy’ food.

THE EXPERIMENT:

Damon only eats the perceived ‘healthy’ foods that are in fact laden with hidden sugars like low-fat yoghurt, muesli bars, juices and cereals.

That Sugar Film

The quote from the movie that really struck a chord was if we remove all sugar laden foods from our supermarket shelves, we would only be left with 20% of produce.  Woah!  Get along to see it!

My New Baby

Cannondale Womens Synapsis Disc 105 5

I’d like to introduce my new baby … a Cannondale Synapse Women’s Disc 105 5!  I have had this on lay-by for the last three months and finally brought it home on Saturday.

This is my very first road bike after mountain biking for many years.  Since having Poppy and James it just didn’t feel right hurtling down single tracks in the bush anymore, and now I look forward to an endurance experience on the road (and yes, contending with traffic).

Oh my – it is so sleek.  Now bring on those road miles.  🚲

Foo Fighters

ads_0001414567630

Nick managed to get his hands on some tickets to see the Foo Fighters in a corporate suite when they played in Hobart on Monday night.

Foo Fighters

We both had big days at work and were grizzling about not feeling like going to a concert on a school night.  I was missing my yoga class and wasn’t able to find a babysitter at the last-minute and in the end had to pay a babysitting agency!

Moan, moan, moan … we walked into the Derwent Entertainment Centre (DEC) and thoughts of yoga quickly disappeared as we were escorted up to the Corporate Suite where I delicately placed my cardigan on a chair, next to a fridge stocked with Joseph Chromy Sparkling and hors-d’oeuvre, surrounded by our friends.  I can’t go back to the mosh … no-one pushed me, spilt drinks on me or yelled in my ears – it was all very civilised but we still rocked with the best of them!

Dave Grohl entered with his band and continued to wow his audience for the next two and a half hours.  It was a tremendous concert and one that I won’t forget in a hurry.

In all the excitement Nick and I forgot to have the “Who’s driving?” chat and after several glasses of sparkling and rocking on we ended up getting a lift home with Depha.  Waking a little rusty the next day, we had the realisation that the car was still at the DEC.  After maneuvering Hobart’s peak-hour with a hangover to retrieve the car, only to find it was locked in and looking a little lonely.  A trusty groundsman opened the gates and gave us a knowing wave!  The day was a tough one at work, but it was well worth it!

Watch ♥

armani-watches-ar0733-ladies-silver-stainless-steel-watch-p25763-10183_zoom

I am an old-fashioned kind of girl and still wear an analogue watch … tick-tock.  I love knowing that a quick glance down to my wrist gives me all the information I need … am I going to be late for work; is it time to get James and Poppy’s lunch ready or most importantly … is it time for bed yet?  Ha ha!

I have worn the above Emporio Armani watch for 13 years now and it hasn’t missed a beat.  I love the simplicity, yet its subtle style – as it looks more like a bracelet than a watch.

However, I was walking past a jewellery shop in Hobart yesterday when the colourful watch bands from the Daniel Wellington range caught my eye.  I love the clear watch face and those preppy watch bands to match any boating blue.

And then there is my dream watch … the Hermés Cape Cod PM.  So divine in every way.  Sigh …. x

VW ♥

VW

Sob sob … I’ve just sold my little Volkswagen Golf after driving it for 12 years.  However, it has gone to a good home – a young girl who has saved hard for her first car.

I am a Volkswagen lover through and through and have realised I have continuously owned a VW since I bought my first Beetle when I was 16!  Holy cow – that is 29 years!  I worked on a neighbouring farm planting brussel sprouts to save up for my first volksy.  At $1.50 per hour it took me a few years but I worked hard and saved my money.  I felt like all my Christmases had come at once when I finally took possession of a 1971 orange Beetle:

VW Beetle

I paid $1300 for it in 1986 when I had just got my ‘P’ plates.  Living on a farm out-of-town, a car was my ticket to freedom!  I had so many fun times in my first car, despite the back wheel falling off within a matter of weeks of buying it.  That old girl sure did some kilometres – filled with girlfriends and surfboards down to the east coast of Tassie, snowboards and skis heading up to the ‘mountain’ (Ben Lomond) and even further afield to Melbourne and Sydney!  In 1995 I was driving back to Tasmania from Sydney when I broke down on the Hume Highway and had to hitch to the next town … a nice truckie picked me up though (oh dear)?

When I lived in Canada I bought a maroon diesel Golf that was more trouble than what it was worth, but it did the job.  On return to Australia I sold my first Beetle and guess what?  I bought another one – but this time it was a 1973 Superbug (still orange).  I felt so posh having a rounded windscreen, heaters that worked and wider tyres.  I loved that car too and owned it for many years.

I reached my early 30’s, had a proper job and thought it may be time to upgrade.  I sold my beetle for $3500 and purchased a shiny black VW Golf.  I was in heaven … I loved the blue and red dash lights and all the mod cons – air conditioning, fast glass (electric windows) and heating that worked efficiently (that wasn’t piped off the exhaust)!

Twelve years later, we have now outgrown the Golf with our expanding family and all the paraphernalia that one needs (dog, prams, bikes, scooters etc).

A reluctant sale, I felt a little sad seeing my Golf driving down the street this morning but it sure has served me well.  Nick and I had lots of great trips in our car and our babies were safely brought home for the first time from hospital – driving 20ks per hour.

Rest assured, I am still enjoying the German engineering of our family wagon now even though it isn’t a Volkswagen.  I hope we will have another long relationship together.  Ha ha!

Finska ♥

On Saturday we held our annual sporting event – the Peter Stuyvesant International with dear friends that get together for a bit of friendly competition and healthy rivalry!  This year the sport of choice was FINSKA:

Finska

Finska is the addictive log-tossing game from Finland.  An ancient Finnish game, Finska is a unique and seriously addictive outdoor game that will provide genuine entertainment at the beach, the park or in your own backyard.  A race to exactly 50 points, where every game is different, Finska requires both strategy and skill to defeat your opponent and claim victory.  World Championships are played every year in Finland.   At your next picnic, barbecue or family gathering bring out the Finska…you’re sure to have plenty of laughs and fun.  Get off the couch, drop the electronic gizmos and get outside for some real fun with Finska.

This was the eighth year of our event and the first where no-one has been pregnant for some time.  Instead, our little people were excellent spectators and cheer squad!  Aimee took out the overall championship in fine form, with baby on hip.  We had our official awards ceremony and thanked our sponsors!!

Finska is an excellent game and one that I hope to play again soon.

Patagonia ♥

I am a marketers dream as I am extremely brand loyal.  Once I find a brand/product that I am happy with, I am all yours.  One product that I have been loyal to for over 20 years is Patagonia – makers of all things outdoor.

I started wearing their gear when I was living in Canada in the early nineties and still have some of that gear, 20 years later!  My trusty Patagonia down jacket is still going strong after a decade of solid wear.

Patagonia Down Jacket

Patagonia began life in 1973, a thousand feet up, clinging to the side of El Capitan.

It was there that Patagonia founder, Yvon Chouinard, noticed the once-pristine face of the mountain was being pockmarked by thousands of steel pitons being driven into it – the very same steel pitons he was manufacturing in his tin shed in Ventura. Here was a mountain eternal and grand that had stood staunch for 100 million years, a mountain that should last the best part of forever, being flaked away into gravel. The symbolism of the moment set Yvon upon a lifelong mission to prove business can indeed have a simpatico relationship with the natural world.

In the years since, Patagonia has evolved into an enterprise with a wholly unique philosophy, a way of doing things, a way to see the world and our place in it. Today Patagonia is still up on the mountain, but also lives in the oceans and forests, on trails and beaches, all the places where people seek adventure and discovery.

Patagonia gear is designed for exploring, embracing and challenging the frontiers. It’s gear designed for simplicity and utility, gear designed to last, and gear accountable to the environment it’s made for.

The love of a wild and beautiful world comes with an obligation to preserve its wilderness and beauty, and Patagonia is committed to this. It always has been. We donate our time, energy and 1% of all sales to like-minded, grassroots environmental groups who are out there working to keep the natural wonder in the world.

I was cleaning out my cupboards the other day and found a big stack of old Patagonia catalogues dating back to 1994!  ‘Old school’ outdoor gear that featured a lot of green and purple, high-waisted shorts and antiquated technology, but I still loved having a look through all the photos and remembering what I was doing when I first saw these great images.  Whether it was working as a cable-car operator, ski-lift operator or a bushwalking guide the photos always resonated with me, especially the ones featuring children enjoying the outdoors with their parents.

Now in my 40’s I have realised that my dreams of having an outdoors family have indeed come to fruition and I feel blessed that Nick and I have been able to expose Poppy and James to our outdoor world in Tasmania.  Here are some of my favourite photos that I drooled over many moons ago.
