Sneaky Peek : MoMA

We love living in Hobart and having the Museum of Old and New Art – MONA as our ‘local’ art museum.  What a treasure indeed.

Another favourite gallery for me is the Museum of Modern Art – MoMA in New York.  When Nick and I visited the Big Apple in 2010 we spent most of the day savouring the amazing art, food, design and the sheer delight of MoMA.

There is something fanciful about wandering around an iconic gallery or famous museum.  Being in the presence of such famous works by Pollock, Matisse or Picasso for example, makes me feel really happy.  I struggle to comprehend that the piece of art I am actually looking at (and wishing I could touch) is the original piece – that sheer talent is humbling.

Sneaky Peek : My Silent World

These little babies may not be the coolest accessory in town, but they are my life line! I was diagnosed with a mild-to-moderate hearing impairment 6 years ago, after I noticed my television volume kept creeping up and wondering how many times can I say ‘Beg your pardon‘ before it become ridiculous?  Nick deserves a

Sneaky Peek : Stairwell

Last week I gave you an external glimpse of our home, and this week a sneaky peek into our stairwell.  I love the huge steel corner window – reminiscent of the Art Deco period and how the afternoon light floods in.

I had never lived in a double story home before, and growing up I was always intrigued by houses with stairs.  I love the idea of ‘climbing’ up to go to bed, like a little birds nest.  I feel safe upstairs and love that the space is somewhat a private part of our home.  Inevitably I always have little piles on the bottom or top step.  Items that need to be ‘put away’ on their respective floors.

When my nieces and nephews visit us, they are so excited that we have stairs and LOVE playing on them.  However, Poppy’s safety gates have somewhat curbed their freedom of sliding down on their bottoms.

Nick also has wonderful memories of visiting his Grandfather at the house we now live in, when he was a boy.  He and his brothers spent many hours sliding down the stairs on sleeping bags, only to receive warnings about how they would wear out the carpet.  The carpet is still going strong … some 30 years later!

The stairs have also been a great training ground for Poppy as she learns to manoeuvre each step, both up and down.  Sometimes she finds the ‘Scary Stair Monster’ (aka Dad) to hurry her along. Roaaaarrrrr!

Sneaky Peek : Home Sweet Home

I love Spring … and I love our garden at this time of year.  The warmer air and longer days entice you outside to enjoy the wisteria blossoms and the brand new leaves on the oak tree.  You can almost see the grass growing each day and as a result Nick has been giving the mower a good workout.

Our home is a classic Art Deco with very modernist lines and was built in the early 1940’s.  Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra are right at home here!

We have lived here for nearly 5 years, and it is a very special home for us. Nick’s Grandfather lived here for 54 years and his Mum grew up in the house, so there are many family memories.  I love this history and seeing old family photos of a younger garden and hearing the stories of days gone by.

I now enjoy seeing a new generation discover the garden … a garden that has been lovingly grown by hand by Poppy’s forebears.

So today I share with you a glimpse of our very special home and garden.

Sneaky Peek : The Den

Today, I am giving you a sneaky peek into our Den.  I love having a Den – it reminds me of the Brady Bunch, when Mr. Brady would retire to his Den to give Greg some fatherly advice – it sounded so mysterious, and hip!

Our Den was originally an old garage, and Nick’s Grandfather converted it into its current form.  The Art Deco features are still evident with the black light sconces and steel window frames, which we love!

We painted the room several years ago and chose a warmer colour than the rest of the house (which is painted Dulux Antique White USA and Berkshire White).  After many sample pots, we finally decided upon Linseed Quarter Strength, which is often termed ‘Paris Grey‘ – and sounds rather exotic. Last year we also had new honeycomb blinds and a desk installed and as a result, it is a very cosy room.

The Den also houses some of our favourite furniture including the camel leather deck chair that I found in an antique shop (St Georges Antiques) in Battery Point and is originally from Sri Lanka.  We have a family blackwood book shelf; a leather and perspex lamp; the original sofa made by Nick’s Grandfather (which we had covered in a cotton/linen several years ago) and many of our favourite photos, art, books and knick-knacks.

Nick doesn’t quite retire with his cognac, but it is a very pleasant space, especially when the afternoon sun streams in.

Lost : Found

You would have read here that I was quite distraught recently about losing ‘my blankie’! You wouldn’t believe it – but I FOUND IT this morning!  There I was – having just finished our swimming lesson with Poppy, which was the first one in a month.  I had just managed to wrangle Poppy out of her Little

Sneaky Peek : Our Kitchen

Here is a sneaky peek into the heart of our home – our little kitchen! When we moved in, we removed the green stripey wallpaper and painted the room with Dulux Natural White for a crisp, fresh look! It is a lovely little space with a stellar view – which helps when washing up, as

Sneaky Peek : Art, Prints & Photos

Today I am sharing with you some of my favourite art, prints and photos we have in our room.

This New Yorker poster we bought home from the Guggenheim Museum.  I love it so much!

My good friend Aimee painted this for me many years ago and I have carted it around with me for all of that time!

I bought this fabulous Picasso post card from the Picasso Museum in Barcelona in 2005.

This photo was taken by my friend Tim, when he was in Prague. Such fantastic composition.

Sneaky Peek : Poppy’s Room

I LOVE little Poppyseed’s room and I thought I would share some of her beautiful things with you. My favourite piece is her cot and I cherish going in to her after she has woken up and see her standing with her arms up, awaiting ‘collection’. Her Midsummer Light shade is another beauty. It is
