Big School

Poppy - SeagullsNow that Poppy has turned three she had her first day at ‘big school’ yesterday.  Big school (Seagulls) is actually an extension of her childcare program but is located in the grounds of her future primary school – Waimea Heights and is only 5 minutes walk from home.

She was full of beans last night having had a great first day – painting, playing soccer on the oval, reading and riding bikes.

Like James, she is growing by the day.  Her speech is developing, her vocabulary expanding and her attitude is blossoming!  Don’t they say that three is the new two?  We have had to exercise some serious ‘time out’ measures and I need to get better at being consistently consistent!

Over the weekend Poppy ‘helped’ me in the kitchen!  Here is her ‘Ballerina Cake’ … oh yum!

9 Months

James - 9 Months oldOur little boy is now 9 months old and is quite the terror.  Well … no he is just ‘Mr Explorer’ at the moment.

Long gone are the days where he would just lay on his mat and be happy to ogle at the reflections on the ceiling.  ‘Big Bob’ is now off exploring the house including all of the out-of-bounds places like the fireplace, the kitchen pantry and the stairs.  He is also pulling up on anything and everything resulting in quite a few tumbles and bruises to his head!

I found him yesterday ‘in’ the fireplace eating coal, with blackened hands and face.  Our little coal miner has two bottom teeth with more on the way.  Oh my, how quickly time flies.

An Italian Invitation

Poppy ScootingWhat we thought would be a quick walk to the beach yesterday afternoon, turned out to be an extended cultural expedition!

After popping a roast chicken in the oven as my sister was coming around for dinner, we grabbed the kids, the dog, the scooter and wandered down to Longpoint Beach to stretch our legs before dinner.

All was going well with Poppy scooting beautifully, James enjoying his pram ride and Maisy sniffing lots of dogs until we turned into our street and ran into local identity, MARIO and his dog Bridget.

Poppy used to cry every time she saw Mario and I was never quite sure if it was his thick Italian accent (despite him living in Australia for nearly 50 years), his pimped Gucci sunglasses that he wears regularly or his attempts to kiss her on both cheeks.  Over the past six months she has slowly warmed to him and yesterday greeted him like a long-lost friend with a big smile and a thumbs up.  🙂

Mario invited us in to meet his wife and without looking at my watch and thinking about the chicken in the oven at home, we agreed and accepted his kind invitation.  We were ushered into their beautiful home where I felt I had stepped into an Italian villa.  Out came the chocolates for Poppy and the whiskey for us.  I politely declined, mumbling something about having to feed James but Nick embraced the hospitality with gusto.

Their generous hospitality ensued and Poppy was on her second Lindt ball and Nick his second Glenfiddich.  James was in his element gooing and gaaing, looking around at all the amazing photos on the wall and before you knew it, it was nearly 6:00 pm.  I got the giggles as usually I run a tight ship during witching hour each day but we had abandoned ship tonight!

With another round about to be poured we both politely insisted that we would have to call it a night and get the children home.  After lots of double kisses goodbye Nick ran ahead to rescue the poor chicken in the oven and to greet my sister.

A classic spur of the moment where you accept an invitation and reap the benefits!  Cath had let herself in and the chicken was perfect.  Xx

Harvest

Mill FarmWe had another visit to the family farm late last week where Poppy and her cousin Nina, helped their Nanna harvest carrots, corn and tomatoes from her veggie garden.

Such a simple task but one that reconnected Poppy with her food and her Grandmother.

After all the vegetables had been picked there was time for running races, climbing trees and the simple game of hide-and-seek.  Such a joy to see Poppy play in the very backyard I did when I was her age. Xx

Artful Fools

TMAGJames and I were ‘Artful Fools’ this morning and fled the house on this fine autumn day to visit the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

What is it about art galleries that make you feel so good?  I have very positive feelings when I am in the midst of amazing art – maybe it is being surrounded by work that has been lovingly created by talented artisans, expressing their every thought through the stroke of a brush.  I also have the same feelings in bookshops – all those loving words printed on paper.

We were lucky to experience the most valuable painting the museum has ever exhibited, non other than the Angelica and the wounded Medoro c. 1860 by Eugène Delacroix.  This painting is only in Tasmania for a week as part of the Hobart Baroque Festival.

TMAG

TMAGWe also visited the exhibition from the National Gallery of Australia Capital & Country – The Federation Years 1900 – 1914 and ogled over works by the likes of McCubben, Roberts and Piguenit.

Capital & CountryI especially loved The Sonnet c.1907 by George W Lambert.  James didn’t mind it either.  He he.  X

Sophie la Girafe

Sophie la Girafe

Everyone loves Sophie la Girafe including little James.  Poppy and I bought one for him last week and Sophie has been chewed, squeaked, squashed and loved since then.  They even have matching outfits:

James & Sophie

Poppy has always loved her Sophie since she was a baby and her little giraffe still takes pride of place in her bed, along with all of her other toys.

sophie-giraffe

The little giraffe was born on 25th May in the year 1961…Saint Sophie’s day!

Sophie la girafe®, who looked exactly the same then as she does today, went into production on a Thursday 25th May, hence her name.

She was an immediate success. Young mothers immediately saw that she was a must for their children… When the first signs of teething appear, Sophie la girafe® helps babies stop crying!

The organic Sophie la Girafe Cosmetics range has just been released as well:

Position Description

IMG_8901

James is now 8 months old and is almost crawling, he’s eating solids, sleeping well and becoming more and more animated by the day.  I’m not sure whether it is the changing of seasons or the fact that it feels as though I have been in ‘ground-hog’ day for a very long time, but I am feeling a little ‘blah’ of late.

I will be returning to work in July and I have been thinking about the role a mother plays and how our ‘job’ would fit into a typical position description.  I liken motherhood to a high-powered job where there is no knock off time!  This is what I came up with:

  1. Human resources manager (general care and well-being of your children)
  2. Environmental waste coordinator (changing of nappies, potty training)
  3. Stock control (supermarket shopping)
  4. Accountant (paying bills)
  5. Counsellor (cuddles and encouragement)
  6. Teacher (reading and writing)
  7. Activities officer (crafts, play-dates, parks)
  8. Chef (cooking all those meals)
  9. Laundry extraordinaire (to think I used to do one load of washing a week)
  10. Cleaner (currently high demand for one at the moment – see photos below)

Exhausted, I flop onto the couch each night craving for some precious quiet time and to watch some trashy tellie, when my husband says:

Honey, would you mind rubbing my feet!

Like I said – no knock off time!  X

What me?

Mmmm - cleaner please

Scissors

Poppy has experienced her first haircut this morning and like all good ‘over-the-top-Mums’ I was there to clearly document this important event.

Here is a ‘before’ photo of her gorgeous tendrils … that were starting to go a little crazy and becoming more difficult to tame!

Poppy's Haircut

So a visit to Head Rush in Sandy Bay was on the agenda this morning, where she was treated like royalty.

TaaDaa … here is the final result!  Much more respectable I’m sure you will agree.

Ps:  I’m afraid to admit I kept some of her locks that had fallen to the floor as a keepsake – enough already OTTM (over-the-top-Mum)!    X

Big Bob

James – alternately known as ‘Big Bob’ in our house, is changing so much day by day.

He is now ‘rocking’ up on all fours in preparation to crawl, is grabbing everything he can get his hands on, is chowing down on toast, veggies and fruit and is so much more alert.

I find I have to stop and catch my breath because our little baby boy of 2 kilos is growing up so fast and will be running around before I know it.  Bless.  Xx
