Hot : Hot : Hot

IMG_0772_2

Yesterday was hot in Hobart … far too hot to cook so no recipe today.

After work my sister Cath picked me up and we met Nick and Poppy at the boat and went across to Howrah Beach for a swim. It was delightful to dive in the cool water, after a busy day of teaching!

We sat in the sun eating fruit and then went to Cath’s for a BBQ in West Hobart. Little Pops slept in her porta-cot just in her nappy and kept saying: “Hot, Hot”!

Light Up The Derwent

We have had a very ‘social’ weekend, so much so that I am only going to concentrate on Friday night in this post (watch this space tomorrow for a recap of the remainder of the weekend).

Nick and I, my sister Cath and her daughter Bronte entered the ‘Light Up The Derwent’ event in celebration of Wrest Point Casino’s 40 years of operation.  Nick spent many hours illuminating “Tagus” with numerous christmas lights before the big event, where his electrical skills came in very handy.  There are great prizes to be won, and so our competitive spirit came out!

We rafted up with the Butler’s and their yacht “Iverus” to discuss our tactics and then at 9:00 pm we entered the ‘Parade of Lights’ behind the “Lady Nelson”.  We felt quite famous as we cruised passed the Casino and the crowds.  We even had a little boogie on board!

It was a beautiful evening and all the boats looked fabulous … now we just have to wait until they announce the winners!

A ‘Whale’ of a Time

Recherche Bay

We have had a wonderful family holiday away on the boat for five days. This was our ‘personal best’ in regards to the duration on-board with Poppy. She was a real little champ – sleeping for 12 hours each night and maintaining her day time sleeps on board.  She absolutely loves the beach, shells, dolphins, the dinghy and is a real little ‘salty sea dog!’

Salty Sea Dog

We meandered our way down ‘The Channel’ reaching our southern destination of Cockle Creek and Recherche Bay on Monday morning, in moody light and calm waters.  The weather wasn’t that great, but we enjoyed our time playing on the beautiful beaches and walking to the Bronzed Whale Sculpture.

It was Maisy’s 4th Birthday on Monday and she loved the special treats she received – runs on the beach, a sausage, lots of pats and even a Happy Birthday song!

Each morning Poppy would wake up next to us in her little cot and the first word she would say is:  “BOAT”!  Nothing like pointing out the obvious. Bless xx

Sneaky Peek : Boating Expedition

We have been away on the boat since Saturday afternoon and have had a fantastic time.

Here are a couple of sneaky photos … but there will be more to come when I return home to my laptop!

Escape on Tagus

Tagus at Little Fancy BayWe have spent the weekend away on the boat, trying to find some respite from the heat and coming to terms with the devastating fires that have gripped South-Eastern Tasmania.

Friday was an incredibly eerie day, with temperatures soaring to 41.3 c with a howling wind.  Even though we had planned to head down the Channel on the boat, all I really wanted to do was to stay at home with the blinds closed.

We did leave and found a beautiful place to have a swim and cool down. Poppy loved swimming with her Dad, but man-oh-man it was HOT.  I am not very good in the heat!

We stayed in The Gentleman’s – Bruny Island that night and thankfully the weather did cool down in the evening.  Poppy slept all night too which was a relief, as she hasn’t been away on the boat since Easter last year.

The next day we went for a beautiful swim at Conningham and then met up with Nick’s parents.  In the afternoon we caught up with James, Leesa, Meg and Emily and stayed at Missionary Bay.

Yesterday we had a lovely day at our favourite spot – Little Fancy Bay. Sublime!

Happy New Year

2013 here we come!  We have had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and I hope you have too? I always love this time of year.  The hum of ‘holidays’ is in the air – the freedom of time; family members home from distant shores; cars loaded with bikes, kayaks and trailers; sail boats a

Sneaky Peak : On The Water

I know I have posted photos of our boating trips before, but I was scratching my head on what to focus my ‘Sneaky Peek’ on today, and came across these series of photos which I love.

The photos were taken on the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the summer of 2011 when I was expecting Poppy.  Nick and I had travelled in our little boat over from the Tasman Peninsula that day and met up with his folks for a spot of fishing, a G&T and dinner.  Bliss xx

A Freycinet Frolic

We spent the weekend with our friends Marcus, Emma and their son Hugo at Coles Bay and enjoyed the Freycinet Peninsula.  We arrived on Friday night after an interesting trip up the East Coast.  Poppy didn’t really sleep as we had planned and once we arrived she took a long time to settle in her Porta-a-Cot.  Man those cots are a nightmare to put up – it kept collapsing on us.

On Saturday we loaded up the boat and were whisked down to Schouten Island, where we had a lovely picnic on the white, white sand.  Poppy got so excited about the water she walked right in to the waves with her shoes on!  We love this part of our coastline and I cherish the ability to show Poppy these amazing places.

Marcus and Nick went diving in the afternoon and Emma and I had wonderful plans of reading trashy mags, but our plans were foiled.  Running after two dogs, and an 18 month old in a ‘non-baby proof’ shack was exhausting.  Poppy was obsessed with opening all the drawers and cupboards and playing with the vanilla essence and wine glasses. Needless to say we didn’t get much reading done!

On Sunday, Marcus and Emma dropped us off in the boat to Hazards Beach where Nick and I walked across the isthmus to Wineglass Bay. Poppy was so excited about seeing this famous beach, she fell asleep!

The boys had another dive in the afternoon and brought back four crayfish and lots of abalone!  Yum.

What a wonderful weekend!  xx

Slipyard Baby

Nick has just launched into a big project on the boat – it is time for the ‘ol boy to have a ‘make over’.  Most boats are referred to as ‘she‘ but for some reason, Tagus has always been ‘he‘.

The make over includes scraping back all the old paint and stickers, and removing the gunnel rails before it can be sanded, and finally painted.  It is going to look very schmick once completed.

Poppy was right at home in the slip yards this morning and enjoyed the ride in the wheelbarrow with Dad.  Bless. x

Masterful

Nick enjoyed a night away on the boat with his friends – Marcus, Butsy & Phil. Here is a fantastic view of Tagus and Iverus from above.
