Humdrum

hum·drum  (hŭm′drŭm′)

adj.  Lacking variety or excitement; boring or dull.
n.  Monotonous talk or routine.

I find it tempting to always ‘glamourise’ your life ‘online’.  Be it on your blog, Instagram, Facebook or Twitter – we tend to showcase our best sides by uploading that perfect pic or writing only about the good times.  But what about the humdrum of day-to-day?  The boring bits in-between that nobody really thinks are valid to share.

Today I am going to share with you some of my humdrum – driving the kids to the park, blurry swing photos, the mess at home and spending a ‘crafternoon’ with Poppy making a Fairy Wand that ends up looking nothing like it should have.  Nothing glamorous – but it is the beauty of my world.

Chinese Puzzle

ChinesePuzzleF

My friend Annabelle and I went to the State Cinema on Tuesday night to see Chinese Puzzle.  I have always loved The Spanish Apartment and Russian Dolls and this third movie didn’t disappoint.  It was one of those movies that I was totally ‘in the moment’ with and didn’t want to end.

Go along and see it – lighthearted entertainment to take one’s mind off any sleepless baby!

Review by David Stratton

CHINESE PUZZLE is the third part of a trilogy following on from THE SPANISH APARTMENT and RUSSIAN DOLLS. Xavier, Romain Duris, a writer, has followed his English ex-wife, Wendy, KELLY REILLY, to New York after she left him, taking their two children, to live with her wealthy lover, PETER HERMANN. Xavier stays for a while with his lesbian friend Isabelle, CECILE DE FRANCE, and her lover Ju, SANDRINE HOLT, until the latter helps him find an old apartment in Chinatown. Because he needs American residency, Xavier enters into an arranged marriage with a Chinese girl, LI JUN LI, and he also receives the occasional visit from his former lover Martine, AUDREY TAUTOU.

Sneaky Peek : Sleep Talk

Baby Sleeping by Martin-LyneSLEEP – the topic of conversations, thought processes and planning for most mother’s with young babies!  Unfortunately the topic is currently consuming me as James has totally regressed with his sleeping and has been very unsettled at night for many months.

I swallowed my pride last week and called in a ‘Sleep and Settling Consultant’!  Our mothers and grandmothers would ‘tut tut’ but I had reached breaking point.  I knew I needed help after I ashamedly hurled my Ugg boot across my bedroom in desperation, after so many nights of sleeplessness.

James would sleep well during the day as I have always been quite routine with him – punctuating my days by making sure I am home for his long lunch time sleep.  He would also settle well during the day and at bedtime but would then wake frequently from 11.00pm onwards.

Up until last week I would quickly breastfeed him and pop him back in his cot for another slumber.  Before I realised it, I was now on the self-perpetuating cycle of feeding him during the night and rewarding him for his wakefulness – resulting in exhaustion from being awake and having to make more milk.  Mooo!  I also knew I was feeding him for longer than he physically needed – especially as he had started well on solids and shouldn’t be needing any extra top-ups during the night.

I had made a rod for my own back – he was now in the habit of waking for a little midnight cuddle, some warm breast milk and a pat from his Mummy?  Why wouldn’t he?  Your mind can make the most appropriate justification for any behaviour – especially in the wee hours:

Oh he’s teething

It’s quicker to feed him so he will settle back to sleep

He didn’t drink much at bedtime, he must be hungry

We’re away on the boat – he isn’t in his familiar environment

Oh he must be still teething

Blah, blah, blah

I was like a walking zombie, only getting between 3 – 4 hours of sleep on my worst nights and enduring his crying of up to 2 hours at a time.  A helmet had encased my brain and all I could see was fog – I felt desperately tired and grumpy.

Ding Dong … Libby, the Sleep Consultant turned up last Friday and sat with me for nearly two hours to discuss my plight.  She taught me about sleep cycles; parent-led sleep associations; over-tiredness; pausing and consistency.  I had a previous understanding of all of these but I guess had lost the confidence to really apply them when the cards were down.

With copious notes in hand and a new vigor of hope in my step I felt excited about this next commitment.  Ironically James slept through that whole night … and the next … and the next.  I didn’t even need to apply my new routine … until last night when he was back to his old ways and persisted on crying from 1:40am to 3:20am.  Yawn!

A few steps forward and a couple back.  I am determined for this not to beat me.  I need my beauty sleep.  Xxx

Mum ♥

I love my mum

“I love my Mum because … she plays with my dog, she does jobs, I like her”.  Poppy presented me with this masterpiece yesterday morning for Mother’s Day.

I hope you all had a nice day?  I managed a sleep in and a very relaxing day spent with my little munchkins, Nick and his folks.  We made pizza’s and ended up having a long lunch.  Lovely.  X

Play : Pirate : Patient

Poppy

Our days have been busy – so busy in fact that I didn’t manage to publish a post yesterday!  We have had swimming lessons and trying to spend as much time out of the house when the sun is shining.

At Nutgrove Park on Thursday Poppy loved climbing on all the equipment whilst James was happy to sit and run the sand through his hands and to eat the Autumn leaves!

To finish off the day, Poppy had her first visit to the dentist.  All OK in the teeth department and she was a very good patient.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar ♥

Hungry Caterpillar

Today I am loving The Very Hungry Caterpillar books.

Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a perennial favourite with children and adults alike. Its imaginative illustration and clever cut-out detail charts the progress of a very hungry caterpillar as he eats his way through the week.

I distinctly remember reading the book when I was young and have always loved the story and all those fabulous colours.  I now enjoy sharing such a timeless classic with our little hungry caterpillar!

Cosy Conversation

Table

I’m re-posting my Instagram photo from Sunday because I just love the low Autumn light across the table.

Nick was away boating over the weekend and so my sister Cath and dear friend Depha, joined me for dinner on Saturday evening.

I lit the fire, cooked up a big Coq Au Vin and settled in for a cosy night of conversation. Xx

Bright and Dreary?

Warwick Fabric

Another wet and dreary Hobart day.  Another load of washing.  Another sleepless baby.

Lucky for these beautiful colours from a Warwick fabric sample to bring some cheer to my day.

Teepee ♥

TeepeeWe gave Poppy this fabulous teepee for her birthday where it has taken pride of place in the corner of her bedroom.  She first experienced Bea Bea’s (her Grandmother’s) teepee at Christmas but we thought she would love one of her very own.

Poppy has even ‘gone camping’ and slept in her teepee for a couple of nights!

Complete with matching bunting and her deer doona cover from Norsu Interiors – it is cuteness personified.

Big School

Poppy - SeagullsNow that Poppy has turned three she had her first day at ‘big school’ yesterday.  Big school (Seagulls) is actually an extension of her childcare program but is located in the grounds of her future primary school – Waimea Heights and is only 5 minutes walk from home.

She was full of beans last night having had a great first day – painting, playing soccer on the oval, reading and riding bikes.

Like James, she is growing by the day.  Her speech is developing, her vocabulary expanding and her attitude is blossoming!  Don’t they say that three is the new two?  We have had to exercise some serious ‘time out’ measures and I need to get better at being consistently consistent!

Over the weekend Poppy ‘helped’ me in the kitchen!  Here is her ‘Ballerina Cake’ … oh yum!
